Kitten Conundrum

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

So, my sweet little kittens are finally home with me. There are totally adorable… and as anyone can guess keeping me up until all hours of the night with their need to play. Who doesn’t love being woken up with two kittens running full tilt across your face at 5 in the morning. Of course they want to sleep and cuddle when I need to be doing stuff to, like going to work. I was originally going to call them Mr. Bigglesworth (Iggie) and Mischief, however Mike brought it to my attention that they should be named as a set… so I think I might call them Tiger and Lilly instead… get it. What do you all think? Here are there photos: the boy (Iggie or Tiger) http://www.saffitz.com/sam/album06/IMGP1758 and the girl (Mischief or Lilly) http://www.saffitz.com/sam/album06/IMGP1754.

Other than that work is going pretty good. I’m on several project teams right now. Spain, a living centers initiative and a new masterplan for a NASA space center. Pretty soon my total world domintation will come full circle.

I’m very excited to go home finally for Labor Day in a  bit. I miss home already, but Atlanta is treating me well. Sorry, my mind cant seem to focus today, so this is all you get. I have finally finished uploading all of my pictures from spring… and will soon begin the arduous task of doing the same for my summer photos… maybe someday I’ll catch up.

Another lazy Saturday

Well, here I am, sitting at dunkin donuts and using there free wireless. I would say my life is slowly beginning to fall into place. I am quite thankful for this. It was a godsend mving to a place that I was already familiar with. I navigate quite well nowadays, very rarely ending up in place where I feel the need to lock my doors. I would like to say that after living in West philly i was prepared, but i think that would be untrue. The poverty here is so much more about a lack of education… it seems a lot easier to survive in a place being homeless when you dont have to fear freezing to death in the winter… though at the same time i think this breeds a certain amount of laziness and nonchalance. I do however have to say that southern hospitatility is no joke… it still takes me a few seconds when a checkout person is sincerely wishing me a nice day. I just talked to Lauren and it sounds like she and I are in similar predicaments. We both just hang about filling our days with trips to the store and visual stimulation from movies, or in my case bad teen based programming like the Real World.

This will not be for much longer though b/c yesterday I am happy to say that I went down to the local county animal shelter and adopted not one, but two tiny furballs. one of the kittens, agirl, is a little black and white ball of energy, with a pouchy little belly. her name is itchy and i knew she was perfect b/c she chose me, sticking her little paw out and tapping me on the shoulder as i walked by. the other, an all black male named duke is more of the silent type… and i’m afraid a bit ofa climber as i discovered when they were let out in a dog run and he immediately climbed to the ceiling on the chainlink fence, relizing once he got there that there was no logical way down. i fell in love with itchy and had only been planning on getting one, but apparently these two have been together for most of there two months on earth and therefore work together as a team. anyways i was reassured that having two kittens will make it more likely that they will play with each other rather than think of ways to pop my air mattress that i have temporarily been calling my bed. i dont really believe the people at the shelter, but oh well, i suppose that is the joy of a rental and owning no furniture of real value. i cant pick the two of them up though until tuesday b/c the need the rest of their vaccines, microchip and the big snip.

i’m so exicted to have something happy to see me when i come home at night.

on the work front i feel i have been thrown into the deep end… and i may have forgotten to hold my nose. somehow i went from being the newgirl to being the only person working on aproposal for a big residential development in the south of spain (you can see africa on most days from the site). it was a request for propsals from EDAW, EDSA, and one other unamed big firm. I’m working with the principal-in-charge from Atlanta, and Miami… me being the only other person on the team. they want me to come up with a 2-hour powerpoint presentation (translatable into spanish) for the trip in two weeks. yikes. i am also supposed to take a role as an impromptu project manager, doling out responsibility and keeping the big bosses on track. i wont get my hopes up, but i may force myself to be so invaluable that they have to take me along. crossing my fingers.

anyways, i’m off to research various clubs and groups i can join in the area to make friends and keep myself busy… not that i’m not already, but i always like to be overscheduled.

Here I am in Atlanta after a sped-up two week process of coming down here. I finally have a moment to breath and have hopped on to someone’s wireless while listening to the soulful sounds of the “smooth negro jazz” that wafts up to my apartment from the coffee shop for affluent black atlantians directly below my two-month sublet. I’m glad I’m on this side of the building though with a nice view of the Bank of America rocketship building in the distance, rather than being on the more expensice side with a view of the pool… that by and by smells like you are swimming in a vat of donut glaze as the next door lot is Krispy Kreme. Oh well, I signed a year lease today at this gated community called the Post Renaissance. Although in theory I am diametrically opposed to the idea of a community cut off to the rest of the neighborhood by a ten-foot fence I am not going to listen to my more rational side when it comes to my feeling of saftey in an area that feels at times like 47th street Philly and at others like Rittenhouse. Oh well I will have a workout facility, pool, gated parking and a balcony on the third floor with a view of the city. (and no “smooth negro jazz” keeping me up until 2 every night.

work is good. that being said i had to make myself look busy all week b/c no one knew i was coming… therefore i wasn’t assigned to any projects and was thereby left floating in the ether. even once i make it onto the schedule i still think i will be shuffled around a bit as it appears the my degree in landscape architecture AND regional planning has landed me in the position of being put into both the planning and design studios. the better for me b/c maybe it will keep me as far away from CAD details as i would like. i fell back into an easy rythmn with my old friends at the office and i think soon my social calendar will begin to fill up.

my goals for the next few months are to: a. sign up for some adult ed. classes… my reasoning to be revealed in the future, b. get a kitten… that way i at least of something of the non-amphibious persuasion to great me when I come home, c. continue the planning of my nuptual shindig, d. get back into a natural schedule which will allow me to eat better, workout and lose the midget which i so-far cannot find but whoch magiaclly reappears clinging to me every time i step on the scale.
